About Us

For over 50 years, Vancouver Phoenix Gymnastics (VPG) has provided safe, inclusive and diverse athlete-focused gymnastics to athletes ages 1 to 100.  Whether recreational gymnasts learning the foundations of physical literacy, or high-performance athletes aspiring to be Olympians, VPG has the programs and coaches whose expertise, heart and commitment make the impossible possible.

As the only competitive gymnastics program in Vancouver, and one of the largest in Western Canada, Phoenix is proud to have a long standing tradition of excellence.  Our passion is to foster a love of gymnastics while providing a strong foundation of skills through Gymnastics for All programs.  This early skill development may lead athletes to be invited to join the competitive program where Phoenix athletes have soared at local, provincial, national and international competitions.

Vancouver Phoenix Gymnastics was founded in 1969, by Sev Heiberg, a PhD Nuclear Physicist, who held a lifelong love for gymnastics, first as a competitor and then as a high level coach.  Having founded the Ottawa Gymnastics Club in 1960, Sev traded Ottawa in for Vancouver, where he built the Phoenix Gymnastics Club on traditions and values of generosity, sportsmanship, work ethic, honour and his love of gymnastics. Sev was a founding member of Gymnastics BC and a Life Member of both Gymnastics BC & Gymnastics Canada.  The Sev Heiberg National Stream Coach of the Year Award is named in his honour, with his influence on the gymnastics world apparent to this day.

For approximately 20 years, the Club had a number of homes: the old Boys & Girls Club located in Kitsilano, St. James Community Square in 1990, the Jericho Hill Centre in 1997, followed by the Heather Street gym, with 5600 sq. ft. to house the competitive program.

In 2005, Phoenix Gymnastics moved into a permanent home, after a considerable fundraising campaign led by its volunteer Board of Directors.  The Millennium Sport Facility, features a 15,500 square foot dedicated training facility equipped with a full size competitive floor, rod floor, tumble track, in-floor and above-ground trampoline, foam pit and full set of men’s and women’s competitive and recreational equipment.

In 2006, the Tree House Gym was created in the upper mezzanine, designed for tiny gymnasts, those in Parent & Tot classes as well as preschoolers.

With its team of highly-skilled coaches, dedicated athletes, knowledgeable administration team, volunteers and committed families, Vancouver Phoenix Gymnastics is a respected leader in the gymnastics community.
